Childcare / Daycare

Childcare workers supervise children when parents are unable to. They ensure children are protected and entertained.

Babysitters are frequently considered childcare workers. They feed, entertain, supervise, and clean messes made by children. Babysitters also read to, organize activities, and tuck children into their beds. Those tending babies change diapers and feed them with bottles.

Nannies are childcare workers providing extended care for children. Nannies could spend entire days with children, or tend children throughout a period of years. They usually prepare meals, perform housework, and do laundry. Certain nannies travel to the home where they provide care while some live with the families they work for.

Childcare workers employed with schools or childcare centers usually supervise multiple children. They welcome the children at the beginning of the day and organize activities for them. Childcare workers usually determine daily routines prior to the arrival of the children. They usually read to, organize art activities, and put the children down for naps daily.

How do you prepare for this career?

Childcare workers usually begin working with children after completing high school. However, those employed at childcare centers are often required to become licensed in their respective states where they provide childcare. Certain states emphasize safety while other states require childcare workers to complete college courses.

Those with college degrees or certificates will improve their employment opportunities. Candidates applying for certain jobs are required to possess an associate’s degree to be considered for employment. Students in childcare related associate programs usually take early childhood health, education, and learning courses.

How much will I earn?

Wages for childcare workers in the 50th percentile were between $7.11-10.54 per hour during 2008. The lower 10th percentile made $6.21 per hour or less while those in the upper 10th percentile made $13.01 per hour or more. Childcare workers employed with elementary and secondary schools earned larger salaries than those employed at childcare facilities.

How many jobs are there?

During 2008, nearly 1.4 million childcare workers were employed throughout the United States. A large portion of these workers were employed part time as in house nannies and babysitters. A little more than 30 percent ran their own businesses. Childcare workers could also be frequently found at theme parks, church centers, daycare facilities, and government buildings.

What is the future outlook for this career?

Jobs for childcare workers in the future will be abundant, particularly for experienced professionals. Growth in the childcare industry is expected to increase at a higher rate than growth in other industries at least until 2016 since more parents will be a part of the workforce.
