Human Resources Assistant

Human resources assistants maintain employee records containing information about pay grades, benefits, and employee’s names, addresses, and tax information. On a daily basis, human resources assistants update data and respond to questions about workers. They may also write reports for supervisors.

Certain human resources assistants take phone calls and open letters. Some assist managers when hiring new employees or conduct Internet research seeking qualified job seekers. They inform individuals of new openings. They collect information about prior work experience and education history from potential employees. They administer exams and instruct new employees about organizational policies. Human resources assistants may also obtain references about potential employees from previous or current companies. They send letters or make phone calls to inform applicants whether they will be hired.

How do you prepare for this career?

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, human resource assistants should have a minimum of  a high school degree or a G.E.D., though most have at least a bachelor's degree. human resource assistants may work closely with others, so they may need to possess good people skills. They may also need to speak articulately, particularly over the phone. They may need to have a basic understanding of how to use a computer. Human resources assistants may have to protect confidential information about employees.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, human resource assistants made a median salary of $52,690 annually in 2010. Those in the lowest 10 percent made $29,050 or less, while assistants in the top 10 percent made $93,260 or more.
