A master's degree is awarded to candidates who complete one to three years of focused study in a specific career field or field of knowledge. A master's level education can prepare you for entry into a specific career field, the career advancement opportunities, or personal enrichment and achievement.
The coursework in a master’s degree can be significantly more demanding than the coursework offered by an undergraduate degree. Earning a master’s degree may require dedication and self-discipline. In addition to the knowledge and skill set that can be attained by earning a master’s degree, you may also be exposed to helpful networking. Networking may be built into the master's degree experience, as students form professional connections with peers, professors, and experts in their chosen field.
While some master level degree programs can lead directly to a career, others do not. An M.A. in Engineering might qualify its holder for immediate career opportunities upon graduation. In contrast, an M.A. in History might prepare its holder to go on to doctoral study and a university career instead. However, the connection between the degree and a specific career path is not direct.
